Our Story
We are a group of eight local people, who came together in 2015 and set about negotiating with Calderdale Council to take over, on behalf of Rastrick residents, ownership of the old community building next to Field Lane School. To do this we had to become trustees of a registered charity – The Space @ Field Lane Group, reg. no, 1170265. It took us two years, but in July 2017, we took the building over and then set about making it fit for a community hub in the twenty-first century.
We raised over £500,000 from organisations like the National Lottery, the Tudor Trust and Rastrick Big Local for refurbishment work and having gone out to tender for the works, the transformation was completed last summer when we opened the doors to a bright new community hub. It’s a place for people to come together for activities, to access services, to have a chat, to meet a friendly face.
Although fabulously Rastrick Big Local are helping us with funding in our early stages, we have to become financially viable going
forwards so as to pay the bills generally and to support all the community activities, events and projects we plan and want you to run with us. So we hire out the building for events and meetings and children’s parties.
We are completely independent of the Council or any other body. At the beginning we were a non-elected group, just a bunch of local
people who are passionate about our community and wanted to make this happen. Now though, we need to be elected and so each year at the AGM, people who become ‘members’ (it’s free) can vote for trustees. And it’s to the members that the trustees are accountable.
